Clydesdales

The Clydesdale is a draft horse, a horse bred for strength and pulling power. Other draft horses include the Shire, Irish draught, and Suffolk Punch.

Tug and cart

The Clydesdale originated in the Clyde Valley in Scotland, making them truly native to this country. They were developed in the early 18th centaury to help with farming by breeding large Flemish horses with the smaller Scottish breeds of the time. Standing from 16.2 to 19hh (5’5” to 6’3”) high at the base of their mane they are amongst the giants of the horse world. Not only are they tall but they are magnificent to look at. The Clydesdale horse society describes the breed as having a "flamboyant style, a flashy, spirited bearing and a high stepping action that makes him a singularly elegant animal." Clydesdales can be many different colours including black, bay, and roan, and generally have white markings on the legs and face. They have heavy feathering on the feet.

The temperament of the Clydesdale is celebrated. Clydesdales are known to be very gentle and kind. Draft horses in general are calm; however the Clydesdales are especially docile, making them willing and eager to please.

Tug - Our Clydesdale

Tug is a 17hh Clydesdale and is a gelding (meaning he has been neutered). He is 11years old and fits the breed description down to the ground. Although he is the largest of our three horses, he is the most gentle, so don’t let his height deceive you. Tug is immensely strong, having worked in the Forestry Service, pulling logs, yet will look after the smallest child entrusted onto his back.

Seeing a true Scottish breed as impressive as a Clydesdale is a must for any Scottish holiday, so make sure you meet him during your stay.

It is not easy to find a saddle and bridle to fit a Clydesdale. Tug’s bridle was hand made as an off the peg one would not fit him and his saddle is an “Ideal H&C” saddle, designed for horses with a similar build to Tug.
